What Is ACT?
Building flexibility instead of
fighting every difficult thought.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy focuses on psychological flexibility — the ability to stay present, make room for internal experiences, and choose actions that support what matters most.
Rather than trying to eliminate every uncomfortable thought or feeling, ACT helps clients change their relationship with those experiences so they can move forward more freely.

Who ACT May Help
Support for feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected from what matters.
01
Anxiety & Avoidance
Persistent worry, fear, overthinking, or efforts to avoid uncomfortable thoughts, feelings, and situations.
02
Depression & Disconnection
Low motivation, hopelessness, withdrawal, or difficulty connecting daily choices with personal meaning.
03
Stress & Life Transitions
Support while navigating change, grief, uncertainty, identity, relationships, or competing responsibilities.
The Six Core ACT Processes
Skills that strengthen
psychological flexibility.
ACT brings together acceptance, mindfulness, perspective-taking, values, and committed action.
Acceptance
Make room for thoughts, emotions, and sensations without unnecessary struggle.
Cognitive Defusion
Notice thoughts as mental events rather than treating every thought as a fact or command.
Present-Moment Awareness
Bring attention back to what is happening here and now.
Self As Context
Develop a broader perspective from which thoughts and emotions can be observed.
Values
Clarify the qualities, relationships, and directions that matter most.
Committed Action
Take practical steps toward valued goals, even when discomfort is present.
What Clients Practice
Skills for living
more intentionally.

Notice Without Fighting
Observe thoughts and feelings without automatically trying to suppress or control them.

Step Back From Thoughts
Create distance from self-critical, anxious, or discouraging mental stories.

Return To The Present
Use mindfulness to reconnect with the current moment instead of getting lost in worry.

Clarify Personal Values
Identify what kind of person you want to be and what you want your actions to represent.

Take Values-Based Action
Choose manageable steps that move life in a meaningful direction.

Build Psychological Flexibility
Respond more openly and intentionally when difficult experiences arise.
ACT At Innerspace
Values-based support within a personalized treatment plan.
ACT may be integrated into Innerspace’s Intensive Outpatient and Partial Hospitalization Programs based on each client’s symptoms, goals, and clinical needs.
It may be combined with DBT, CBT, ERP, individual counseling, group therapy, family sessions, psychiatric care, and medication management.
Acceptance does not mean liking, approving of, or giving up on a difficult situation. It means reducing the struggle with what is already present so that meaningful action becomes possible.

From Our Clinical Team
ACT isn't about eliminating difficult thoughts or emotions—it's about learning to live a meaningful life alongside them. We help clients build psychological flexibility so they can move toward what matters most.
